Meet Parkinsonia aculeata, commonly called Mexican Palo Verde.

Blue Palo Verde gets the billing. Little Leaf gets the desert credentials. Desert Museum gets the paparazzi.
Meanwhile, Parkinsonia aculeata has been quietly building a rather impressive résumé.
Fast growing. Heat loving. Drought defying. Flower flaunting. Shade sharing.
And remarkably clever with its chlorophyll.

“Palo Verde” translates to green stick, and that green bark is far more than good branding. Its stems and branches contain chlorophyll and contribute to photosynthesis, allowing the tree to keep making energy even when drought encourages those tiny leaflets to make an early exit.

Less leaf. More limb. Still making lunch from sunlight.

Its long, fine textured foliage gives the canopy an almost fountain like movement, filtering fierce desert sunshine rather than simply fighting it. Then flowering season arrives and the supposedly lesser known sibling suddenly becomes an attention seeker, producing masses of fragrant yellow blooms.
