Dalbergia sissoo - a.k.a North Indian Rosewood

Teeth Brushing? Yup - Dalbergia’s slender tree twigs are chewed as a toothbrush and then split as tongue cleaners. Apparently, in India 80% still start their day with the “Teeth Cleaning Twig”.

While you might not need an extra toothbrush planted, Dalbergia are plenty easy on the Eyes. Leathery, alternate, pinnately compound maiden-hair-fern green leaves dance in the sunlight. Deciduous, giving a little “season” to us in the West. Fragrant ballerina-pink cluster, followed by oblong, flat, thin, strap-like pods.

The Plant Formerly Known as Rhus
The plant formerly known as Rhus lancea has gone through a bit of a rebrand -
Turns out, the botanical paparazzi caught something deeper than a name change: a genetic divergence.
Welcome to the stage: Searsia lancea.
Once lumped in with its New World cousins under Rhus, this South African native was politely excused after molecular phylogenetics (that’s DNA detective work for plants) revealed the genus was polyphyletic - a scientific way of saying “you’re not all from the same family after all.”
Botanist Fred A. Barkley first recognized the genus Searsia, but it wasn’t until Moffett’s 2007 paper (with supporting molecular data from Yi et al., 2004) that the name officially took root.
Since then, herbaria, databases, and even the World Flora Online have joined the chorus:
Rhus lancea → Searsia lancea.
So, while the taxonomy may sound thorny, this is a story of evolution - of science catching up to what the plant already knew.
Still the same resilient, drought-tolerant, wind-whispering tree -
just walking into 2025 with a new ID.

Don’t let the “Yuck” fool you - this is a anything but.... Long, icy-blue-gray strap-shaped sharp serrated narrow leaves on a spoon shaped base (hence the Spoon moniker) radiate from a stout short trunk. Look but don’t touch as the toothed leaves love to catch on to your clothes and ruin a pair of nylons (anyone even wear these anymore?).

The name for the genus comes from the Greek equation of ‘dasys’ (dense, rough, shaggy) + ‘lirion’ (lily). The specific epithet honors Lieutenant George M. Wheeler who led the geographical survey of the Western US.
